Kia Kaha Chch

There were more big earthquakes in Christchurch today. Two days out from Christmas, right when everyone was finishing work, firing up the BBQ and getting into the holiday spirit - a holiday I'm sure every Kiwi will agree that Christchurch really deserved - when BOOM! The Earth went mental again. And again. And again.

So now we're seeing the same images all over again - cliffs falling, liquefaction bubbling from the ground, flooded streets and frightened people. It's awful.

My heart goes out to Christchurch. This is not what you needed, and it came at the worst possible time. It's a huge relief that no one was seriously injured or killed, but with every earthquake comes another round of insurance claims, liquefaction clearing and frayed nerves.

On a national scale, all of this comes after major floods in Nelson, and flash floods in Papakura.

The year may have included a World Cup win, but it also contained earthquakes, bushfires, flooding, drought and snow in places where snow doesn't normally fall. Needless to say, many of us are looking forward to putting 2011 behind us.

Here's hoping 2012 is a whole lot better.
