NZVMA09

Last week I was fortunate enough to win tickets to the New Zealand Vodafone Music Awards, which were held tonight at Vector Arena and wow! What a night!

I went with Cate and we had a blast. We looked hot and even though we were up in the cheap seats we had a great view and got to hear some great music too.

It was quite interesting seeing the whole thing come off. The show opened with a hilarious little skit where Dai Henwood, the host, made fun of some of this year's music videos and then went into a performance by Midnight Youth.

I've often underrated Midnight Youth because of their popularity, but discovered they are actually pretty incredible live. It also helps that I secretly love the song they performed, All On Our Own.

That was the start of a number of fantastic performances. It was followed by Sola Rosa who featured the lead singer in an 8 foot stilt-dress, Fat Freddy's Drop (who unfortunately just didn't really work in such a huge venue), John Rowles (who I was mighty excited about), Ladyhawke and The Mint Chicks with their incredible remake of She's A Mod.

The awards themselves may as well have just been given to Ladyhawke when she walked in the door but there were some upsets - like The Feelers taking biggest selling album.

Ultimately I felt like the whole thing was honouring the same four artists all night, but to be fair, most awards shows are dominated by one or two people.

After the night was over we grabbed Love-A-Duck and Cate lost her Giapoginity while we caught up with a few Twitter peeps.

Overall it was one of those great nights I've been having a lot of lately. Good times, good people, good music.
